Finally, got around to using my screen printing equipment again. The bulb blew in the exposing lamp in the middle of an exposure and was really annoyed as it spoiled the project! Since then, it has just sat in the studio. But new year, fresh ideas and raring to go! I am trying out some new ideas for a trade show. The photo above shows the screen under the exposing lamp. and below is the exposed screen after being cleaned.
I'm really pleased with the outcome, considering I'm a newbie to screen printing. I love the deer scene and this will be used to make coasters and freestanding piece. Below shows the enamel designs on glass.

I have now made some more items and now waiting to add a splash of colour to the clear glass and will be firing these later. Will be posting photos of the finished pieces soon

New Year - Fresh Start

Happy New Year! A little late I know, but have time to breath now. The last few months have been so busy, I haven't had a chance to update my blog. I'm hoping I will be able to keep on track this year!

I have to say, I am using Facebook more and more these days, simply because it's short and sweet! You do not have to spend so long thinking about what to write. Then there is twitter too - so much internet marketing!! It certainly keeps me on my toes.

January is the Spring Trade Show event in Glasgow. I am now working on new products to launch at the show and making some stock. I have also received some trade orders already - and it's only the first week of January!

Crafts for Christmas - SECC Glasgow

Excited.... I have taken a stand at this year's Hobbycraft event at the SECC in Glasgow. You will find me on stand E10, Crafts for Christmas. For the first time this year, the organisers are showcasing Scottish Highland businesses and there are five different businesses, making good quality handcrafted products.

These are just some of the new items I will be selling at the show and have been added to my Autumn Trade Catalogue.The show will be open Thursday 27 October - Sunday 30 October and 20,000 visitors are expected.

Dundee Flower & Food Festival .... Continued

We had a great weekend at Dundee once again at the Flower and Food Festival, with Gino D'Acampo being the main attraction on Sunday. He gave a few cookery demonstrations and the one in the afternoon took place on the music stage (above). He was actually a really funny guy, answering lots of questions from the audience.

He also did a book signing and we were right next to him, as you can see from the photo above. My daughter, who had lost her voice from playing and screaming with the kids on the next pitch on site, was shouting out 'Gino' in a very husky voice, it was very cute. Any way, it got his attention as he looked at her (on my shoulders), came over, caressed her face, then gave her a kiss. Not that I was jealous!!!! He even signed my daughter's arm - she was happy really!

The Council staff worked hard making sure the showground was accessible to all after the night rainfall - they go around with mini dumper trucks spreading bark over the ground. They do a great job.

We were pitched next to another family exhibiting at the show who had some children which were great company for our daughter. She had a fab time too!

We had Cornish Pasties every day - they were so yummy (can you tell from the photo).

I'm now getting ready for Open Studios this weekend, so a massive tidy up in the studio!

Dundee Flower & Food Festival

It's that time of year again when I'll be visiting the Dundee Festival (where has the past year gone??). It's a great 3 day show with celebrities visiting too - as you can see from the photo Gino D'aCampo and Monty Don are attending this year. I'm secretly hoping that Gino will be doing his 'naked chef' demonstration again?? Well, there's no harm in dreaming!

There is plenty of activities going on too; music stage, children's crafts, food marquee, theatre, floral demonstrations, and a huge craft marquee, where you will find Lazy Daisy Glass. Not forgetting the wonderful garden displays.

Art & Craft Exhibition, Elgin

I will be taking part in an art and craft exhibition to be held in St Giles Shopping Centre, Elgin from Saturday 20 August - Wednesday 24 August, 10am - 4pm (Sunday 11am - 4pm).

Demonstrations will be taking place throughout the event and special guest artists will also be exhibiting. Rachel Ashton is one of the artists; Rachel is a well known local artist from Huntly, is self taught and predominantly paints soft landscapes. You can view her work here

This event is also to help raise funds for Help for Heroes, as you know, a worthwhile charity.

Come along and watch our ceramicist, kilt maker or wood turner at work and view the beautiful artworks on show.

Community Project - Portknockie Primary School

I have been working on a community project over a couple of months, where I made four glass art panels for a local school. As you can see from the above photo, the panels complete and installed.

I met a local teacher, Tom Hay from Portknockie Primary School, at a local craft fair and we started talking about glass fusing and that he was interested in learning about it. I mentioned that I wanted to be involved in a community project with a school, his school was working on the theme 'Made in Scotland' and we discussed the possibility of working together. One thing lead to another. I then visited Portknockie Primary and did three 30 minute presentations to each group, explaining the process.

The School ran a design competition, where all the pupils took part and made collage-type pictures of what the village of Portknockie meant to them. There was some fantastic pictures and I was lucky to be one of the judges too. Above - the judging panel.

From the design chosen and in hand, I cut all the designs out of glass back in the studio. I returned a short time later, where the pupils had some hands-on experience by sticking bits of glass to the panels and the youngest ones, cut out fish, seaweed and jellyfish out of copper foil and sprinkled glass frit to the borders.

I also made the plaque displayed below the panels (above).

Each panel measures 600 x 400mm - they make a great display on the wall in the library at Portknockie School.

Highland Games at Gordon Castle

I attended Gordon Castle on Sunday 22 May - the first Highland Games since the 1930's. I was very impressed with the attendance and really pleased the new event received local support. It was a gamble for Gordon Castle to re-start such an event after 75 years, but they pulled it off. The location is stunning too.

I was there as part of the Speyside Artisans (above), seven of us pitched up to enjoy the day. The weather held up for most of the day, but the wind was too much for all the gazebos and they started taking off. And as a result, we all had to pack away early, as the gazebos were starting to break.

No Highland Games are complete without a Pipe Band - this is Dufftown & District. They looked and sounded fantastic.

Perhaps the Castle will entertain the idea of hiring a large marquee, so we can have an indoor pitch. The industrial marquees are able to take the weather, better than our little ones!

Green Fingers - Grow Your Own - Part I

It was a beautiful summery morning - one day last month we were out in the garden at 8am to start work on planting and setting up our mini greenhouse. Our daughter was so enthusiastic, here she is helping to fill the containers with compost:

We bought little grow your own kits - adding water to the plugs, sowing the seeds, and also plated our own seeds from packets, then we watched them turn in to these:

It took us a couple of hours, enjoying the sunshine, to get all the planting done, but we now have a full greenhouse:

I'm glad to say, our daughter's enthusiasm still exists and waters the plants regularly. She still gets excited each week and regularly investigates their growth.

We are growing tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, carrots, pumpkins, peppers, lettuces and sunflowers. At least we will all enjoy eating our own fruit and veg this summer.

Launch of Highland Key

I recently attended the launch of Highland Key - an online gateway to the Scottish Highlands, offering discount cards to visitors (or locals). The business trade event took place at Achnagairn House in Kirkhill, a beautifully stunning private house venue. The House has 24 bedrooms, all individually themed, a spectacular ballroom, all in a stunningly secluded location. A great venue for weddings!

I was also asked to make some corporate plates for the canapes. The Highland Key logo incorporates the Scottish thistle, and these were then designed in to the plates - green, purple and pink (see above).

Spud the Piper welcomed everyone to the event.

My daughter loved these cupcakes, courtesy of Cupcake Creations in Inverness - she hand paints the individual logos on to each cake, very clever! They are the most tastiest of cakes and always look beautiful and so many people comment on how wonderful they taste.

The main presentation took place in the Ballroom - a stunning room with vaulted ceiling and huge stone fireplace. The chairs were also decorated, courtesy of Dress the Day, again incorporating Highland Key colours.

The Event Manager gave us a personal tour of some of the bedrooms in the house, but will leave that for another blog post as they were stunning, especially the Honeymoon Suite.

Commission Window - Findochty Holiday Cottage

I recently finished a commission window for the Findochty Holiday Cottage and delivered it today. It was a beautiful day to visit the harbour town of Findochty and the holiday let the owners, Clare and Steve, are renovating is delightful. The old fisherman's cottage is just a two minute walk from a quaint sandy beach - what more could you ask for when looking for a holiday. If lucky, you could even see some of the Moray Firth Spotted Dolphins playfully swimming by. They are quite common in the area.

Planning stage - drawing the design to scale (above), shading in areas and marking where colours should go.

Piecing together all the shapes to make sure it all fits (above). I love creating 'sea' themed glass products and was thrilled when Clare and Steve asked that I undertake the commission. Being a Cornish lass, it makes perfect sense to design such patterns.

The final design laid out on the kiln shelf - ready for firing. The window measures 720mm x 500mm and was a great project to work on. It will be placed in the inner porch when entering the property. It will be the first thing people see when opening the front door - I think it's very welcoming and suits the cottage.

Moray Business Women - Mentoring Scheme

I attended the launch of the Moray Business Women's Mentoring Scheme on Monday, held at Voluptu in Elgin. It was a really good turnout, with the local press in attendance as well as STV. The Scheme was officially opened by MP Angus Robertson, and he gave a very good encouraging speech. The scheme was the brainchild of Faith Simpson, local Accountant, based in Elgin, who is also a Committee Member of the Club. As a local business herself, Faith knows there is a lack of support for women setting up in business. There is no one to talk to about the day to day issues they are facing when trying to set up and run a business. So through Moray Business Women, they are launching a Mentoring Scheme for women who are setting up in business and those in the early stages of running their business.

The launch was held at Voluptu because they are the first member on the Scheme. Sharyn has recently opened her Boutique in Elgin, selling beautiful clothes for the curvy lady. And of course, stocking Lazy Daisy Glass!

Moray Business Women have chosen 6 of their members to be mentors, each with their own unique talents and skills. These ladies are offering their knowledge and skills completely free - what a great scheme!

British Craft Trade Fair, Harrogate

Not long returned from the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate and had a good time once again, although totally shattering! I stayed in the centre of town, the hotel was in the Montpellier Quarter and was ideally situated for everything. They call the Montpellier Quarter "Harrogate's best kept secret" - they are right. It is such a quaint and beautiful area. Best of all, there was a Wagamama around the corner from the hotel. A place I haven't visited since leaving London and has been sorely missed! I love Wagamama so was delighted to have them in my life once again, albeit a takeaway. People were telling me that I HAD to visit Betty's - the famous Tea Room. There were six of us (exhibitors) that met up one evening from the trade show - we had a beautiful meal and evening. I was so impressed with the food that I decided to have breakfast at Betty's on my last day. The most delicious scrambled egg and bacon muffin. Never tasted anything like it before - magnificent! I even managed to come away with some goodies for hubby and daughter, and a Fat Rascal for me!

I also went for a walk around the Quater on my last morning just to take in some of the sights.

Although these shows can be exhausting, I had a lovely break in Harrogate and met some wonderful exhibitors and hopefully will be meeting up with them again next year. In the meantine, I have orders to be getting on with.

Screen Printing on Glass Workshop

I had a fantastic day recently, visiting Rachel Elliott Glassworks in Edinburgh. I travelled down to Edinburgh the evening before, Rachel came to meet me at the hotel and we headed in to town for something to eat. She even gave me a small guided tour of the City. Edinburgh Castle was beautifully lit against the dark night sky and then on to the Indian restaurant. A delicious meal too! I thoroughly enjoyed my screen printing course at Rachel's studio. We caught up on business stuff and covered quite a bit of glass stuff too. These were the designs I made on to glass. They had not been cleaned at this point: Washing the paint from the screen:

Thank you to Rachel for being a perfect host and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it past far too quickly. I headed back home the same day, so a flying visit. Hopefully next time I travel to Edinburgh, it will be a little longer to take in some of the sites by day.

Young Business of the Year Award

I attended the Highland Business Women's Club Awards Ceremony on Friday night at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness. It was a fantastic night and a beautiful hotel.

I've been a member of the Business Women's Club for a short time and was pleased to be shortlisted and nominated for four categories; Enterprising Business of the Year, Young Business of the Year, Businesswomen of the Year and Member of the Year.

The great news is that I was lucky enough to win Young Business of the Year. I was absolutely thrilled! Another surprise was winning one nights accommodation at the Kingsmills Hotel and Spa in Inverness. A real bonus!

The Club also commissioned me to make all the Awards, here they are:

The awards incorporated dark and light blues (from their logo), the three triangles and on the right of the Award is the Highlands map in bas relief. I used a technique called kiln-carving for this map, by using fibre paper under the glass and firing, it creates an indentation.

The award I won was sponsored by Moray Firth Radio and Nicky Marr (Breakfast Presenter) was compere for the evening. She was great and very funny.

Victorian Lantern - Completed

You may recall that last year I was asked to renovate a Victorian Lantern. The lantern was in a terrible state, broken glass, no glass, broken arm, paint bubbling all over the place, generally neglected. I happened to pop in to the Craigellachie Hotel on another business matter, when the new General Manager was enquiring about getting the lamp renovated. It was my lucky day!

It took hours stripping it and picking out all the old lead paint with pointy tweezers! There was so much detail on the lamp under all the layers of paint, it was truly beautiful. The General Manager requested that the more detailed bits; legs and scalloped edging be finished with gold paint. This was an excellent decision as it brings the lamp to life against the black.

As you can see above, the gold looks great, the new glass sparkling - it certainly has made a huge difference to the entrance now it is working. The General Manager commented that so many people admire it and how wonderful it is now looking.

I was privileged to work on such a project. The lantern was one of the original features of the Hotel, back in the early 1900's, possibly late 1800's - we're not sure of the dates. I thoroughly enjoyed renovating the lantern, it was challenging project!

Glasgow Science Centre - New Stockist

I drove to Glasgow last week and met with the Buyer of the Science Centre. We had a good meeting and pleased to announce that I will be supplying them with my recycled bottle products. They have placed an order the bottle clocks, cheeseboards and coasters:

It was a beautiful sunny day and thoroughly enjoyed the journey, although it took 5 hours to get there, due to traffic and accidents.

The Science Centre manage the Whitelee Windfarm on behalf of Scottish Power Renewables, Europe's largest windfarm. My recycled products will be displayed at this site initially. If successful, they intend to roll out the products at the Science Centre too.

Both are major attractions in Scotland, so a great opportunity for Lazy Daisy Glass. The Science Centre is an amazing place:

Glen Moray Distillery - Commission

I was contacted by the Glen Moray Distillery before Christmas to create some corporate dishes for a new tasting tour taking place this season. The brief was to design the dishes using their corporate colours; dark blue, red and cream. After a meeting going through the different options available, they chose this design:
What I like about them, are their simplicity. These dishes will be used for locally produced food to accompany their whisky and given to visitors to taste.

The show was a lonely one this time around as I had to go on my own. Hubby and daughter usually tag along to help set up etc, but hubby had to work. Although I had some 'me' time, it wasn't the same without them!

I came away with new customers and it was great catching up with existing ones. I also met some great exhibitors and we all keep in touch as we will meet again at other shows. My next trade show will be the British Craft Trade Fair, Harrogate in April. Until then, I have plenty of orders to make.

Valentines Day - Gift Ideas

That romantic time of year will soon be upon us once again, so what will you be buying for your loved one? Here are some new designs created for that special someone in your life. The dish above 'Steampunk Heart' is a trinket dish, measuring 12cm x 12cm and available here. It is a clear glass dish with a copper inclusion to create the image.

Another design is the 'Frit Heart' above, combining copper inclusions with a lovely bright red heart. This is also a trinket dish measuring 12cm x 12cm and available here.

Moving on to my fused glass tiles, as above. These are small tiles measuring 6cm x 6cm that are given as love tokens and can be used as a paperweight or desktop decoration. This design is a modern take on love, called 'Heart U' and available here.

Another fused glass tile available (above) is this 'Frit Heart' made from bright red crushed glass. Measuring 6cm x 6cm and available here.

These 'Blush' Heart Hangers are made using copper heart inclusions with a sprinkling of pink. The pink is transparent so a subtle addition. The hangers measure 12cm x 5cm and ready to hang in your window or against a wall, available here.

Happy New Year - Overview of 2010

Happy New Year to all my customers and followers. 2010 was such a fantastic year that I thought I would share some of my highlights.

I exhibited at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate for the first time in April - it was such a huge show with over 300 exhibitors, which means huge competition. I thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience of the show and have signed up again this year.

The other trade shows I exhibited at were the Spring Show at SECC Glasgow, Autumn Show at SECC Glasgow and The Aviemore Trade Show.

Exhibiting at Strathisla Distillery, Keith

Coast Art Festival (above)

I exhibited at a few shows during 2010 - starting at the Strathisla Distillery in Keith during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. This was a great 4 day event and spoke to many people from all over the world. My second year exhibiting at the Coast Art Festival in Banff. This is a great venue and well attended and again did very well in sales and a commission. The North East Open Studios followed in September, my third year of exhibiting in a local village hall. Speyside Artisans organised the event this year - a collective of talented artists and crafters who live around the Speyside. A selection of my work is also at Boath House near Nairn - a luxury Scottish hotel, and the Craigellachie Hotel in Craigellachie.

Not forgetting my gorgeous daughter, who celebrated her third birthday in 2010. We hired a bouncy castle in the garden and had her friends around for a party. She thoroughly enjoyed the bouncy castle, as did I!! My mum flew up from Cornwall for my daughter's birthday and we had a lovely family time. But it is always a sad time when we have to say out goodbyes, granny saying good bye at the airport:

We also enjoyed a beautiful family holiday in Morocco last year. The weather was perfect, as was the hotel, food and the people. It was our first family holiday and we had such a fab time, so much so, we are hoping to go back this year - to the same hotel. We all enjoyed a morning trek on camels:

I gained some new stockists during 2010, including Baxters Food Group, supplying glass gifts to their Highland Village (below), Celebrations of Turriff, Voluptu Boutique in Elgin, Rosewills Cottage in Whitley Bay, and Lee Chapman Gallery in Keswick, Cumbria, just a few from the list.

New outdoor events were added to my calendar - one of the best ones was the Belladrum Festival was a great 3 day event, and the music was fantastic. The family came and we spent the weekend camping, which is great fun and we were lucky enough to see KT Tungstall, Amy MacDonald, The Whalers (as in Bob Marley), Feeder, Candi Staton (from the 80's) and many more.

I joined Swanky Maison, a new online shopping boutique, offering a selection of high quality handcrafted gifts and homeware. Gifted People is also another online shopping experience, but with a twist. Not only do they sell Scottish gifts, but offer 'experiences' too, for example, a 4x4 off road experience, flying a light aircraft, driving a small hovercraft, or if you fancy something a little more tame, beauty treatments or perhaps a makeover photo shoot. All experiences and gifts are Scottish based.

Christmas was a very busy time also, as I had booked myself in to many more events and was working many hours to get everything done. But thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless.

A quick overview, but hope you enjoyed my wonderful journey (I got the idea from Charlotte Hupfield, whilst reading her blog). I am now gearing up for the Spring Trade show this month and working on a commission project for a local distillery.

Christmas Events - The End

I attended the Cullen Christmas Fair this evening - my last event for this year. It has been such a busy season, that I'm quite glad to be slowing down.

The young children put on a small show; dancing and singing, dressed as reindeer and ballerinas. Have to say, it brought tears to my eyes, thinking my daughter will be like that soon.

On the way home I popped in to Forsyth's Deli in Cullen. They had a late night shopping evening with wine and nibbles, although hot chocolate for me as I was driving. I slowly browsed the shop and ended up buying some Wookey Hole Cheese - it is cave aged cheddar and very tasty, sun-dried tomato crackers and some local chutneys, and had a feast when I got home.

Work is now slowing down with the end of Christmas events, but now have an order to make some dishes for a local distillery - more about that when it becomes publicised.

Brodie Castle - Victorian Christmas Fair

Brodie Castle looked beautiful over the weekend for their annual Victorian Christmas Fair. The fair started Friday through to Sunday. Although, I could not make it on the Saturday due to the adverse weather conditions.

A local school attended to sing Christmas carols, all dressed in Victorian costume:

Lapland......ok, it's Moray

What a winter wonderland, you could easily confuse it with Lapland!

I was due to be at Brodie Castle today for the Victorian Christmas Fair, so after we spent nearly 2 hours clearing the drive to get out, I set off. I decided to stick to the main A96 route to Inverness, thinking this would be a safe bet. How wrong was I. The A96 was treacherous and very slow moving. In parts there were not even any tracks in the road, it was pure snow on top of ice and cars sliding over the place, which caused backlogs of traffic. I have to say though, people were driving sensibly!

I managed to get almost into Elgin, when MFR (local radio - useful for traffic conditions) announced the A96 was closed between Elgin and Forres. BLAST! I turnaround at the nearest roundabout and headed back home - 2 hours later!

I was so fed up with not being able to get to Brodie Castle that I bought Toy Story 1 and 2 in a garage on the way home.

We've had a nice family afternoon watching movies - in the comfort of our home, in front of the fire.

So much for keeping my blog up to date, but now I'm slowing down with work, I'll try and keep it posted regularly. It really has been a manic season.

Isle of Skye

A friend of mine kindly reminded me that my blog needed updating, she said "I'm getting fed up with seeing the same post", and she's right! I've been so busy that I just haven't had a chance to keep it updated lately, so thanks to Gloria, here I am - updating!

I had a great opportunity of visiting the Isle of Skye over the weekend, I was invited to attend the Celebration of Life event held at Portree Community Hall. We haven't visited the island before and was blown away by its beauty. The photo above is the famous Eilean Donan Castle, situated near Dornie. We past this castle on the way, it was a spectacular visit to the castle. We were on the way home from Skye and took a break to walk around and take photos.

Some of the exhibitors stayed at the same hotel in Portree and we met up for dinner Saturday night. We had a lovely meal at the Caledonian Hotel and then had drinks until the small hours!! Needless to say, I was a little delicate at the breakfast table!

While I was working at the event on Sunday, hubby and daughter set off to the harbour and boarded Stardust for a wildlife trip around the island. They were lucky enough to see some Sea Eagles (wing span 6-8 feet and according to my daughter "they were massive"), a seal and a salmon farm, where the fish were diving out of the water. I was rather jealous I missed out on this, but we will visit again one day as a long weekend.

Clachan Yell Were Fantastic

The weather surprised us when we pitched up at the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford - it was a beautiful day, although horrendous wind at times. Huge gusts came along and nearly took the gazebos with it! Some of our stands:

It was an interesting day, not too many folk looking around the craft stalls, but the music was great. I thoroughly enjoyed Clachan Yell - traditional Scottish fiddle music. All the youngsters loved it too as they were all dancing. The fiddle players were brilliant musicians.

It was the first event of it's kind at the museum, and they have to improve on some aspects of it, but the Speyside Artisans would be more than happy to go back next year.

I hung around for a little while listening to the music, but left before Sandi Thom made an appearance. It was a long day, and was quite tired so happy to leave and head off home.

Belladrum - Tartan Heart Festival

Last weekend we were at the Tartan Heart Festival in Belladrum and it was great. We were camping in the traders park, but unfortunately this was right next door to the revellers, which is fine if you don't have to work, but as I was working, lack of sleep was a bit of a problem.

This is my stand at the festival:
The Standing Stones are a new product of mine (in the centre of the table) - they are vibrant and bright and it was these that drew people in to my stand.

I shut up shop early enough in the evenings to enjoy the music. This is The Wailers (as in Bob Marley) and we also saw K T Tungstall, Vatersay Boys, Feeder, Candi Staton, Amy MacDonald. The music was great and such a wonderful atmosphere.
This festival is such a family friendly place, I was very surprised at the amount of activities for kids. Sales were great too and I met some lovely traders and visitors. All in all we had a fab time.

Busy Few Weeks

It has been a busy few weeks lately - with lots of events. The Speyside Artisans will be at the Scout Hall in Aberlour this weekend from Thursday 5th - Saturday 7th - it will be your last chance to see them in Aberlour, so pop along to view all the wonderful things going on. Lesley has been demonstrating silk painting and it is absolutely fascinating watching it at work and what shapes will be created for the salt.

Another new piece I have created lately - Standing Stone. A bright and vibrant standing piece set in a mahogany base. They are so colourful when put in the window:

Recent Exhibitions

I attended the Tea Cosy Exhibition over the weekend in Aberdeen and had a great time. It was an alternative art, craft and design show, taking over a pop-up location. This was my 'stand' - just like a tea party setting. Such an unusual concept, but it worked really well and encouraged people to walk around the whole table and talk to you, as there was no barrier between the customers and makers.

This is one of my newest pieces - The Copse. A chunky Burr Elm stump with the addition of trees. I had some great feedback for this piece so will continue to make similar ones. This sculpture has gone to Starfish Studio in Johnshaven, along with my Journey sculpture.

I also had a stand at the Scout Hall in Aberlour last weekend too. The Speyside Artisans have taken the hall over for three weekends during the summer. There are demonstrations taking place too, as well as refreshments and home bakes.

If you fancy having a go at spinning or pottery, pop along for some fun.

Tea Cosy - Exhibition

I will be exhibiting at Tea Cosy in Aberdeen this weekend - it's an alternative art, craft and design fair set up in the style of a tea party in a pop up location. It will also be my first attendance at this event. This year the alternative-style exhibition will take place in the old Pier shop in Belmont Street.

You can see from the photo above how the space is organised and laid out just like a tea party.

I'm really looking forward to this opportunity as I have been wanting to edge my way in to Aberdeen for some time now and the event sounds good fun.

Opening hours - Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July, 10am - 4pm.

Our Favourite Place for Coffee (and Cake)

Thirteen Moons at the Mill of Towie is a wonderful place to visit for lunch or just coffee. It is a sustainable cafe and smallholding. Our daughter loves it there as she can run around (safely) feeding the ducks and chickens and even collect eggs from the hens (which she finds the most exciting). You cannot beat freshly laid free range eggs, especially when cooked in a bacon and egg roll - yummy. The food is very generous and very tasty and the environment is peaceful - in the middle of the country (apart from the cockerels, but you get used to them). Here are some of the residents:

You even get an audience when eating - the chickens expecting scraps!

The ducks were so cute - resting their beeks on the water bath in the hot sun

The pigs are even friendly, but they escaped out of the normal residence

and now have to keep the goat company in his pen

Dawn and Richard who run the cafe/restaurant also own a pack of huskies, which they race. They are such beautiful-looking creatures.

Thirteen Moons also support local art and craft workers by selling their stock. You will even find Lazy Daisy Glass stock at Thirteen Mooons.

So, if you are in the Keith locality, please visit Thirteen Moons, you will not be disappointed.

I've been Networking

I recently joined the 4Networking organisation - as I work from a rural location, it can become isolated at times. I thought it would be an effective way of marketing my business, raise my profile and meet other like-minded folk.

The meetings are structured, yet informal. So what actually happens? All meetings are held Tuesday - Friday, 8am - 10am (nationwide), with the following schedule:

8am - Open networking (informal)

8.30am - 40 second round - your chance to promote your business to the group and note who you would like to talk to. (This is done while eating your breakfast).

9.00am - coffee break and organise your 1-2-1 appointments

9.10am - 4Sight Slot - An insight into a member's specialist field

9.25am - the start of your 1-2-1 meetings

10am - finish

It's been a long time.........

I cannot believe how long it's been since my last blog post. Such a lot has been happening and just needed time to recharge - I promise I haven't been slacking!!

The Coast Art Festival turned out to be such a great show - had lots of sales and even picked up a commission, which I'm currently working on. The commission is for someone working for a Norwegian Oil Company in Aberdeen. She is a buyer for their company art club. Employees join the art club and pay a monthly fee - at the end of the year, the company matches the money and the buyers go out and buy art for all the members, buying from a list they have devised. The members then have a good value piece of art 1/2 price (as the company pays for half) - What a great idea. Why don't more companies take on this idea. It would certainly keep us artists in work!!

I'm also currently working on some new pieces for an exhibition, will update later once I know if I have been chosen.

I also have a busy summer coming up with some new events - will keep you posted as and when they are happening.

I will try and keep my blog more up to date now that I have recharged my batteries a little.

Preview Night at Coast Art Festival

I attended the Preview Night at Coast Fine Art Exhibition tonight. It's been a very stressful day, trying to get everything organised and the standoffs fitted to take all my glass wall panels. I left the setting up at 5pm, drove home, had a very quick tea, printed price tags, showered and left at 7pm - LATE (as usual).

I arrived to a full house - visitors were everywhere and I still had all my glass panels to hang into the standoffs. Talk about feeling stressed!! However, it didn't take long and I soon calmed down after a nice glass of wine.

We were even visited by the Press - a trio of very funny chaps from Deptford?? I didn't get around to asking what they were doing way up north. But they informed me that my digital camera was crap, and what I needed was a "Chad Camera" (courtesy of Chad Valley) - they were really funny guys - whoever they were!!

Anyway, it was a fab night, and to top it all, I sold two glass sculptures - woo hoo.

COAST Art Festival

I will be exhibiting at the Coast Fine Art Exhibition this weekend. The exhibition takes place in the Macduff Town Hall, nr Banff. You will be able to see some of the new pieces (above) on display as well as a small amount of my unusual jewellery.

I really looking forward to this weekend and have been preparing for it for a few weeks now. Even with a larger kiln, there is still never enough time in the week!!

I also haven't posted for some time, largely due to the fact that I'm so busy right now - preparing for this event, creating work for Boath House in Nairn and The Craigellachie Hotel in Speyside. Boath House and Craigellachie Hotel will be displaying my work - and is available to purchase. I will be visiting these venues next week to drop off my work.

Antique Lantern - Renovation Project

I am currently working on a renovation project - an antique gas lantern from a local hotel. It is no longer gas, of course, but is used as a main light outside the entrance of the hotel. It is completely covered in thick lead paint, which is an absolutely nightmare to remove. It's a shame that such details are covered in thick black paint.

The lantern is copper and brass, but leaving is exposed means a lot of cleaning. It's been enjoyable stripping the lantern, just to see what lay beneath. Here are some more photos of the lantern, this is the beginning of the project, so will update as I go along.

Exhibition at Strathisla Distillery

I am a member of Speyside Artisans, a group of like minded people working and living in Speyside. We are currently exhibiting at Strathisla Distillery during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. We are dotted around the distillery rooms and they are absolutely beautiful, the setting for the distillery is so pretty - as you can see from the photo above.

Aviemore Trade Show

I will be exhibiting at Aviemore Trade Show this weekend. The event is trade only and opens on Sunday 25 April - Tuesday 27 April.

This show is a chance for buyers to meet Scottish makers from the art, craft and gift sectors. This is the only show that guarantees all things Scottish.

Jim Mather MSP will be attending the show on Monday, where he will be presenting the exhibitor awards.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, I spent quite some time preparing for the British Craft Show in Harrogate, then took a couple of days off (to re-energise and spend time with my daughter) and have been busy making orders and stock for this show. So I have been busy.

Experimenting - Powder Frit

Hooray, got our electricity back after the best part of two days without. No phones, no tv, no emails - it was quite peaceful in fact! Although we had to go out today to get a decent meal inside us - there's only so many cans of beans you can eat - cooked on a camping stove.

Anyway, back to work - I was really worried last night when the electricity went off as the kiln was in the process of firing, well, just cooling. I ended up turning the kiln off as the electricity was on/off for an hour or so and was concerned about my programmer. Luckily all my pieces were intact with no problems. I was experimenting with some items - the one you see above was the most stunning, colour-wise. I need to tweak it as it didn't turn out how I expected it to.

With all the snow laying, I thought I would have a photo shoot in the garden - it worked a treat. The colours against the stark white was truly stunning. Although difficult at times, with the glass sinking. The glass piece created wonderful reflections. I held it up in the window of my studio door - look at the stunning reflection against the wall:

Now I can see what great effects I can get, I'm looking forward to creating the final object. The pieces below are also work in progress. All being well, I will show them off when finished.

I Can Cook - Fish Triple Decker

My daughter loves I Can Cook on CBeebies - it's a great program for kids and encourages them to cook (and clean up) in the kitchen. My daughter is only 2, but she likes to get involved and often 'helps' (sometimes hinder!!) me when preparing lunch and dinner.

I decided to make one of the recipes from I Can Cook - Fish Triple Decker. I was so proud of my daughter, as she made all of her own dish. I didn't (and she wouldn't let me) help at all. She even has her own small oven dish:

She was also keen to help with the washing up (although I think its the splishing and splashing in the water she likes, and making foamy mess):

I have to admit that the dish was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed mine, as did my daughter and thought I would share the recipe with you:

Ingredients (per small person):

* haddock or similar white fish fillets

* 2 small mushrooms

* 4 olives, without stone (I left this out)

* 1 rounded tbspn sweetcorn

* tomato sauce

* 2 stalks curly parsley

* 1 slice of day old bread

* pinch of black pepper

* 25g grated cheese

* oil for greasing

Method:

* Grease an ovenproof dish and add fish fillet

* Squirt a liberal amount of tomato sauce on fish and spread all over

* Tear mushrooms, place over fish

* Add sweetcorn and olives

* Cut parsley and sprinkle over fish

* Grate bread

* Mix breadcrumbs with grated cheese and add pepper

* Tip mixture over the fish

* Cook in preheated oven 180 fan/200/gas mark 6 and cook for 20 minutes

or until cooked thoroughly.

This is a good recipe to encourage kids to eat fish and vegetables - and when they make it, they will want to eat it!

Work in Progress

I finally took a photo of 'Journey' above - this had been made last week, but hadn't had space to photograph it. The glass piece is set in to a wood plinth to finish it off. There are copper fish fused between the layers.

In the background of the photo above, I have created some coasters with the new Graffiti design. I am working on making some Coast Curve Clocks in the foreground. This the Coast Curve Clock when wall mounted, it is very pretty when light shines through it:

These are the Graffiti coasters - it's my latest design and just trying it out to see what people think. It's quite a retro design. These are pre-fired, and will brighten slightly when fired. Let me know what you think of the Graffiti design:

Aviemore Gallery

I visited the Aviemore Gallery on Saturday to drop off a trade order. We then spent the day in and around Aviemore as it was such lovely weather.

We had lunch in the Mountain Cafe - my favourite place, you can see the Cairngorm Mountains whilst eating your lunch, heavenly. I then drove up the mountain and watch all the skiers. It was such good fun watching people skiing (and falling over). We had to wait for the funicular train to leave its depot - my daughter was thrilled that she saw the train.

On the way back down we stopped at Lake Morlich and watched the ducks. They were so cute and came running up to us as soon as we got out of the car - they must be used to people feeding them. Unfortunately, we didn't have any bread, so they must have been quite disappointed with us. We then drove on to The Hilton Hotel site and looked around their wooden lodges in the forest. It was a beautiful setting. The Hilton also have an outdoor activities area - rock climbing, trampolining, ski hill etc. Aviemore is a great place is you like outdoor pursuits, there is just so much to do.

Instead of taking the A95 main route home, I decided to take the scenic route from Grantown and we drove 24 miles and only passed three cars - talk about gridlock !!!

All in all we had a fab day.

The Singing Cornishmen (Fishermen's Friends)

I'm supporting my fellow Cornishmen today - these are the Singing Cornishmen, known as the Fishermen's Friends. They meet every Friday evening (summer months) on the beach front in Port Isaac and sing sea shanties. They were spotted by a music producer who had been in the audience last year - long story short - they have now signed a £1m recording contract. How great is that.
You may have heard of Port Isaac in Cornwall, it is where Doc Martin is filmed.

Special Delivery - Bullseye Glass

It's finally here - my pallet of glass. My stock was so low, I was in desperate need of more glass. The glass was very well packaged in its own crate/pallet. It just needs to be carried to my studio now, which is going to take many, many trips as I can only (safely) carry two sheets at a time. They are full sheets, so very big.

Apart from working on my usual designs, I have also been working on some new pieces for the British Craft Trade Fair (BCTF). I will be exhibiting at the BCTF in Harrogate next month. Time has just flown by and I'm sure the panic will start to set in very shortly.

However, I'm really looking forward to this event, as I've heard so much about it and particularly about how massive it is (yikes). So obviously - huge competition.

Now I have more glass, I had better get cracking (not literally!).

A Mothers Day Treat - Part 2

I'm glad to report that I survived my hubby's surprise cooking. Joking aside, my pasty was delicious (although I didn't let on that much). My daughter loved hers and we scoffed the lot.

This was my pasty - it even looked good.

After 18 years together, it just goes to show that anything is possible and hubby being so spontaneous was very welcome.

A Mothers Day Treat - Part 1

I'm in total shock - lost for words.

I was treated to a rather nice chinese meal last night, followed by a delicious carrot occasion cake. A pleasant evening relaxing by our cosy wood burning stove with a spicey run and some nibbles. A perfect end to my long day (I attended my first craft fair of the year).

And, this morning started off wonderfully, cup of tea in bed, surprise cards and chocolates (not one box but two). We were all sitting in the lounge watching Madagascar, when hubby asked "where is the rolling pin"?? I told him and he left the lounge, with me thinking it was rather a strange thing to ask.

Anyway, an hour later, he asked "can you crimp my pasties?" PASTIES, PASTIES I shouted with delight. My favourite of all time! He had been quietly working away in the kitchen making pasties for our tea.

This is the reason for my shock - he NEVER makes a meal (beans on toast is his limit!), let alone pasties. I'm lost for words.

COAST Art Festival

I had some good news today - I have been selected to exhibit at the COAST Art Festival this year. The exhibition runs from 28th - 30th May at the Town Hall in the coastal town of Macduff.

This will be the third year to have run and I was lucky enough to take part last year also. I really wanted to attend this year, mainly because my glass art pieces have progressed and I now produce sculptures.

It was a fantastic event last year with over 35 different activities taking place, from craft workshops, food marquee to various exhibitions in and around banff and macduff.

Festival Wellies and Snow

I've had to buy wellies because we've had so much snow. I already have good waterproof walking boots, but as we've had such deep snow, I'm just getting too wet. They'll be good for a couple of festivals I'll be attending this year too. Although, someone else seems to have bagged them:

Handmade Hell!!

I have recently been accused of 'stealing' and 'copying' designs on another blog. As you can imagine, this fuelled a lot of debate and comment from others. Here's my side of the story. The lattice bowl you see above is one item. Latticework is not a new concept and one of the first things I learnt - there is even a tutorial in 'An Introduction to Glass Fusing' book. Albeit tac fused, but I did not like this version, so fully fused it, which in my eyes is a much better finish.

Colourways - I'm glad you asked. My Spey and Burns ranges were created for the Scottish market (where I currently live). I live near the River Spey - colours associated with rivers = blues. Hence the creation of the blue 'Spey' latticework. The Burns range, after the famous Scottish Bard, Robert Burns. But what colour would you associate with a poet?? A tricky one, so I got my thinking/creative cap on (yes, I actually do have one!) and thought of fire - colours commonly used for fire = red, yellow, orange. How's that for creative thinking! These are the only two colourways I have created and have not made these bowls or wave vessels (that's right, I don't only make bowls) since February/March last year. These designs have also been documented in the Press and Journal Newspaper (more so explaining the idea behind the tartan wave, please feel free to read facts). Anyway, I have moved on from latticework in these forms, I found that it is nothing new to retailers, they have seen it for years. So, if someone was to accuse me of stealing ideas - then surely it would be a Scottish artist, who had created such a piece.

My creations (above) - so similar it's uncanny. No, I didn't copy the colourways above, I only found this site yesterday.

These glass nuggets were also created in my early years (yes I have been working with glass for more than one year, since 2003 in fact, I started in stained glass initially). The first thing to learn is layering and test firing - to see how glass pieces look after firing at different temperatures. This technique is also in the book mentioned earlier. You first start with clear, so not to waste, but move on to colourways - it's a natural progression. These nuggets also form part of the Spey and Burns range - they had been arranged in picture frames and made into wall art. I don't have a photo of the finished product, but can be seen here on my website. I do agree that they are similar to ones I have seen over the internet here is another framed wall art, I love this one (not my work):

But inspiration for my designs were in part due to Brenda Griffith - the queen of fused glass Pop Art. She has written a book ' A Beginner's Guide to Kiln Formed Work', the second book I bought when I Started. She's been fusing since the mid 80's so a very accomplished artist (and a brilliant one - I love her designs). I also make Pop Art ranges - pendants, rings, cufflinks. The other part came from a glass artist (can't think who it was now, it was a long time ago) on the Warm Glass USA website gallery - glass nuggets were arranged in a black box frame, but using a lot black glass - I didn't particularly like this version, so created my own variation.
Coasters..... I love the lattice coasters and still make these. If you read the newspaper article mentioned earlier, it was stated that I was to exhibit at the Royal Cornwall Show (I'm Cornish and proud). I thought it would be a good idea to make the lattice coasters, which look similar to tartan, in the three Cornish tartan colours. Cornwall has tartans too! So I made the Hunting Tartan, National Tartan and St Pirans Tartan colourways (St Pirans is above and my favourite - black, white, red). Each colour from the tartans have been used in each of the coaster designs. The colours in the tartans also have meanings i.e., the national tartan contains black and gold which were the colours of the ancient Cornish kings - hence I now call the coasters Black and Gold - clever! It's actually really interesting, if you would like know about the Cornish tartan colours here. I thought this was an ingenious idea and don't think they exist anywhere else (but don't quote me on that, as I could be wrong!!). So again, if I was to copy the colourways, a Cornish glass artist should be banging on the door. Whilst exhibiting at the show, I was one of EIGHT glass workers - WOW, that was a lot of competition. I also made some St Pirans cufflinks, thinking this was a great idea - low and behold, there were two other fusers who made exactly the same. Is it possible for people who I had never met/seen/knew of to make the exact item. I didn't know who was going to be exhibiting, I hadn't visited the show in years, due to moving away and certainly do not any Cornish fusers (oh, apart from Jo Downs - who's big business down there). The answer is yes, creative people do often think alike, especially when using the same glass/equipment from the same suppliers (glass supplies in this country are limited compared to the States). That goes for equipment - moulds are readily available, designs are going to be similar, I am not that blinkered to realise this fact. This is why as an artist you have to think outside of the box - which I think I do. Feel free to disagree on this one!!

As for stealing the words 'glass love tokens' - this expression has been used for years. The glass company Spaceform make lots of them, and they have been calling then glass tokens for years, since the mid 90's infact. I saw another glass artist making the same ones as mine at a show - also calling them love tokens.However, I'm not going to beat them up about it. I never invented hearts, glass, the design etc. Besides mine are called Dinkies and include the cute Highland Coo.

I started making heart hangers, then latterly coasters as I always get people asking for 'heart things'. Copper heart inclusions in coasters has been around for as long as I can remember, so added the swirly frit as 'something different'. Well at the time of making them, I thought they were different. I have a paper punch with the same swirly pattern and tried to incorporate this design in copper, but it just chewed the copper. Hence the creation of the infamous 'swirl'. Here's some more frit swirlyness - not my creations - I love the swirly coasters:

I could ramble on for hours, but you're probably zzzzzzzzzzz by now. Oh, one final thing, one particular comment made was that I am the same as the first word in my business name 'LAZY'. I think not! I work very hard at making my business work (it's not a hobby). And I take such comments and accusations seriously. As they say 'Frit Happens'!!

New Additions to Website

I have added some new coasters to my website - these are the Doodles range, available in black and white with contrasting patterns.
The Fusion range of dichroic glass pendants were looking a bit wish, so have added some more designs, available here. These are one-off designs, full of vibrant colours and patterns. The Tree of Life pendant, which is hand etched, and the Orb have also been added.

Exporting

I recently had an enquiry from a shop owner residing in Oman, wanting to stock my glass jewellery in their retail outlet. I have to say, I was dubious to begin with - "another scam of some sort", I thought to myself. But, communication developed over the days with the owner picking the jewellery items and some glass fishies - I began to feel at ease. The shop owner was informing me that glass jewellery hasn't really hit their area, so they want to be the first to sell it.

Anyway, I sent a parcel last week using the FedEx 3 day service and have to say that I was very impressed with the couriers (it was quicker to ship to Oman in the middle east, than to Glasgow, four hours down the road!!! - a recent bad experience, but that's another story).

It's a lengthy process having to write out commercial invoices for customs, but once you understand it, it's straightforward.

Don't you just love the photo above - it's a beach in Muscat, Oman - the location of the shop I supplied. Perhaps one day I could even make business trips!! Well, there's always hope.

Meet The Designers

I took my daughter to Matalan on Saturday, where we were lucky enough to meet Colin and Justin (I admit it, it was really me that wanted to meet them). It was manic to say the least - the queue was too long to join when we first arrived. My daughter is only two so as you can imagine keeping a two year old entertained whilst standing in a queue for any length of time - not an easy task!!

However, lucky for me, she fell asleep in her buggy - ahhh.

We queued for over an hour to finally meet Colin and Justin. They were really lovely, very smiley (Colin more so) and spent time chatting to folk. I also gave them a special valentine present, which they really liked.

The designers were at the store promoting their homeware range, which Matalan now sell.

Haiti Charity Auction

A group of like minded jewellery designers and lampworkers have come together to raise money for charity. Each of us has donated beads or jewellery items (even some plushies have been donated) to be auctioned over at Kookie Designs. All proceeds will be going to the Haiti Disaster.

The auction starts at 10am on Monday 8 February.

How to Drill Holes in Glass

Since purchasing my bench pillar drill, I have been busy drilling holes in my glass pieces. I first created my wave clocks, then moved on to the 'True Blood' Hearts (above). I have to say, the thought of drilling glass petrified me. But, with the right tools, it's quite easy. And you do not have to buy a flushing head kit to drill holes. I create wells around holes by using clay:

Some useful tips on how to drill holes in glass:

1) User diamond drill bits, not carbide. Sintered drill bits have diamond content throughout the tip of the drill, so when it wears down, you can run it through a dressing stick to expose new diamonds. Thus extending its lifespan.
2) Use diamond hole saws to drill holes 1/4" or larger, but also for drilling thick glass. I drill 6mm, so I use a hole saw.
3) Use plenty of lubricant (water) to keep the drill bit cool and clean.
4) Use less pressure - the drill will work at its own pace. Don't be hasty!
5) Diamond hole saws work better at 600-900rpm.

Trade Orders

Building Snow Castles

Just when you think you've had all the snow that could fall out of the sky - there's more!!

Hubby came home from work on Friday with a beautiful warm and cozy snowsuit for our daughter. It was as if he had a crystal ball, we've had a few inches of snow.

Of course, our daughter is loving it - even out in the garden with her bucket and spade. She decided to build snow castles.

I, on the other hand have been beavering away in the office. I've FINALLY finished the tax returns, phew! I can now relax and get on with some proper work!!!

Besides getting orders ready from the Trade Show this week, I have some follow up calls to make, so a busy week ahead.

Spring Trade Show - Exhibiting

It was my first show at the SECC and was quite overwhelmed by the size of the hall and the amount of exhibitors. It was all rather daunting and huge competition.

Valentines Day - New Item

Special Delivery

I've been waiting for these beauties - one parcel is one week overdue (because of the snow - arrgh) and the other I only ordered yesterday from down in Kent and got it today. How's that for service! Creative Glass Shop use APC Couriers and have found that they are the only ones that really do next day delivery. Because we are so far north, it usually takes two days to get up here.

Some frit for new projects, diamond drill bits and adaptors and the Silberschnitt circle cutter. I already have a circle cutter, but this one goes up to 24" and my new bowl is 16".

Great results - these were my first attempts. I was well impressed with the quality and ease of use.

Will have to wait a couple of days now before my pieces come out of the kiln - they are for the Spring Trade Fair in Glasgow next weekend.

Sledge - At Last

At last, I managed to get a sledge. Up until yesterday, I could not get a sledge in the whole of the UK for love nor money. I popped into our local town yesterday and there they were - a fresh delivery in. The littleun had a time of her life being dragged around.

There really has been no sign of a thaw either, even the hubby's quad got stuck in the snow and had to dig it out:

BUT woke up today - things are looking brighter; it's thawing and warmer. Hooray.

Talking to a neighbour who works in the local school (kids not back yet) and she said that even the kids are fed up with the snow!!

I'm even looking forward to some work in the studio.

Experimenting and Tidy Up

I've been experimenting lately with my latest mould and also my core drill bits. My core drills have been so good, I haven't had any mishaps (yet). I have been drilling lots of holes in hangers and it's been going very well. However, I did invest in some good quality diamond drill bits. And this has certainly paid off.

I've even managed to have a tidy up in the studio - this is my table for scribbling new ideas:

Snow More!!

As I look out of the window,

There's still plenty of snow,

Have only one thing to say,

Please take our snow away!!

We went for a walk this morning (just to get out of the house and see some scenery other than four walls). It was a very pleasant walk apart from my walking boots being 1/2 size too small - ouch!! My feet have expanded. As you can see from the photo above, the snow is up to the windows. Some photos from this morning. The three humps you see in the photo below are - cars!!

Make Jewellery - I'm in Print

It's official, my name is in print. Make Jewellery magazine contacted me some time ago and asked if I could write my domino pendant tutorial for them as they were printing a rock chick feature edition. Welcome to my Punk Rock Skull Domino Pendants - this is my double page spread - initially they told me I only had a single page, but I sent enough items for two pages.

Weather update - we have had constant snow and weather is very bad here in rural Scotland. We lost our power earlier so I may not be contactable in the next few days as the snow is not letting up.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year - I cannot believe that 2009 went by so quickly. I haven't ventured out much (not even into the studio) as the weather is quite bad. as you can see from the photo above, we have lots of snow.

We were invited to our friends house yesterday as a New Year tradition of theirs. Although the roads were pretty dicey, it helps to have a 4 x 4 vehicle!! It was well worth the journey as we were given stovies for our supper - delicious.

Well, I have a few busy days ahead now as I will be designing and making new fused glass goodies for the Spring Trade Show in Glasgow at the end of this month. Time really has flown - yikes!!

My New Year resolution - try to blog as much as possible, but not to spend hours on the laptop. A contradiction I know, but I must stop 'researching' so much. Time is very precious and better spent in the studio and playing with my daughter.

Santa and his Reindeers

I haven't been very busy blogging these days as I am concentrating on designing new products for the Glasgow trade fair at the end of January and keeping up with Christmas orders. Pressure is definitely on and have been beavering away in my studio.

I took a well-earned break yesterday and took my daughter to visit Santa and his reindeers. I drove to the Cairngorms near Aviemore and we had a fantastic day out. Christmas is not Christmas without seeing reindeers in the mountains.

We walked along Loch Morlich - it was very atmospheric. Thick frost covered the ground, the beautiful forest surrounding the loch and the white tipped mountains in the background. Loch Morlich is in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park:

Not forgetting fat Robin Redbreast - he really was a well-fed birdie:

On the way back we stopped in Aviemore itself and had a late lunch - the restaurant looked out to the mountains and it was just picture perfect. The white tipped mountains were surrounded by a pale pink sky after the sun had set, which reflected off the snow. Didn't take any photos of this as we were eating inside, but believe me it was beautiful.

And to top it off, we saw the steam train puff by with Santa in it - it had finished for the day and was going back to its station.

A perfect day with my gorgeous daughter!!

Recent Firings

It's been a while since my last post, so I thought I would let you see what I've been making. This firing was a mixture of experimental things and some items for fairs. It's all very colourful.

I have the kiln programmed for a firing tonight - I raided the local pub for some bottles and will be making cheeseboards. These have proved very popular lately - a good christmas gift - a great idea to give to someone who has everything!

I will be at Delgatie Castle in Turriff tomorrow from 10am - 4pm. The castle is holding it's annual Victorian Christmas Fair.

A Tidy Studio

Have some units in my studio now and everything is tidy (for now). As time goes on, it will not continue to look like this!!

Hubby has been working very hard lately to get my studio finished and units installed - so a big thanks to him. He's yet to install some units opposite so I will have plenty of workspace. One side will house my cold working tools/machines and the other space is for all my cutting and making. It all sounds very organised - one tries!!!

Here's my latest tool - a work station to hold my drill. I will now be able to make holes in glass. I have just ordered some clock movements, so will now be able to experiment with clocks.

I have so many ideas - never enough hours though.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

We've been having some weird weather lately - one minute it's sunny and mild, the next day it's -4. I was waiting for a friend to visit last week and looked out of the window and saw this amazing double full rainbow. I fetched my camera and took these colourful shots. It was so pretty.

Bring Your Own Bottle

I decided to slump a batch of bottles as my first firing - just in case anything disastrous happened and didn't want to ruin my fusing glass.

But as it happened, everything turned out great. Now I have some nice bottles to sell as cheeseboards/platters. I have slumped a few in my small kiln, but could only make one at a time (I did say it was a small kiln!!) - which is not cost effective or efficient. However, each one I made sold really quickly so there is definitely a demand for them. People like them because they are quirky.

I'm now experimenting with the items and having lots of fun.

Cupcakes - Baking Day

We had our first baking day last weekend - and made these yummy cupcakes. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed herself. She even has her own apron:

When I said she could lick the bowl - she took it literally:

She even enjoyed the washing up - she's going to be a domestic goddess, me thinks!!

Kiln - Up and Running

At last - my kiln has now been connected and it's all systems GO!!

I have done my test fire - this was to check that the program unit is working correctly, I then had to fire the kiln empty - to settle the kiln.

Now, I have some test pieces in the kiln on full fire and these will be ready tomorrow.

I went into my studio today and was sweating - the kiln generates so much heat!!

I will be busy now creating new pieces for the Spring Trade Show at the SECC, Glasgow (January 2010).

A Nice Day Out

I visited Logie Steading today as I had an order to drop off - the weather was so wonderful that I took the daughter to play in the play park, then we talked to the horses and Highland cows (or hairy cows as my daughter calls them). Logie Steading and Estate is in such a beautiful location - in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by fields and trees. Here's the Highland Cow:

I then drove on to Nairn - a lovely seaside town. I dropped off some more stock for Caledonian Craft Connections and then decided to go to the beach. If it's nice weather I always take my daughter to the beach for a run around. The weather was lovely and mild, just a little cloudy.

We came across this mermaid in the sand - isn't it fab. Someone took along time to create this masterpiece.

The beach also gave me an opportunity to take some photos of my popular Lazy Bones fish:

I will be exhibiting at Scotland's Trade Fair in January at the SECC, Glasgow and have been lucky enough to have been selected and will be featured in trade magazines. Hence the need to take some photos at the beach - Lazy Bones fish above.

Dichroic Cabochons

These are some of the dichroic cabochons I have recently been making - stocking up for Christmas.

This is a busy time of year for me, as I attend local craft fairs, coffee mornings etc and will be attending the Glasgow Christmas Show on 19/20 December. A two day event in the Royal Concert Halls - I haven't done this event before, so fingers crossed there will be lots of last minute shoppers.

I have made some of these slider pendants:

I bought a few of the silver mounted pendants to try back in the summer - they sold really quickly, so I will now be adding them to my website (later tonight). They look great hanging on leather thong - it really suits this design of pendant.

The circular patterned pendants are also very popular and usually sell quickly. Will be adding these to my website over the next couple of days.

Chocolate Week - What's your Favourite??

Did you know it's chocolate week?

Nor did I, until I saw a feature in a magazine at the weekend. There was even a 2 day chocolate event in London to celebrate (if only I lived closer, I would have been first in line!!).

How to recognise good chocolate

The quality and provenance of the cocoa beans and the manufacturing process is vital just as it is for fine wines.The country of origin & quality of the cocoa bean is far more important than the country in which chocolate is made. If your chocolate is primarily sold on the basis of the country it was made in, you are probably buying overpriced, low grade chocolate.Ideally chocolate should contain a minimum cocoa content of 60%+ for dark and 30%+ for milk. However, just because a chocolate contains 70% cocoa does not mean it is good – if the cocoa beans, original ingredients and the production processes are not good, then you are not buying good chocolate.Chocolate shouldn’t really contain anything you don’t recognise - so if you see an ‘e’ number, artificial preservatives or hydrogenated fats, think again... Studio Update

My studio is coming along nicely (the above photo is the entrance corridor). The hubby has worked really hard getting it ready - he has just laid the floating floor and done the taping/jointing.

Against the far wall is where the kiln will be (above)

I'm really pleased with it and it's a great space. It has taken a long time, but hubby does work full time, then he comes home and works on the studio evenings and weekends (mostly).

It's nearly ready for my spanking new kiln - I just can't wait to start using it.
